How Much Should Realtors Spend on Closing Gifts? (2026 Guide)

By Dayanne Andrade, Broker Associate and Founder of Kintoir

How much should a Realtor spend on a closing gift? There is no required amount or universal industry average. A useful budget is one you can repeat without strain and one that leaves room for the details that make the gift feel personal. For many agents, that might mean a small keepsake on one transaction and a larger basket on another.

I work with closings as an agent and make client gifts at Kintoir. Here is the budgeting approach I would use before picking a product.

The quick answer: choose a range first

How to set your own closing gift budget

1. Start with the transaction economics

Look at what you actually earn after your brokerage split, transaction costs, and other business expenses. Pick a gift amount that fits your marketing budget for that client. Some agents like to use a percentage as an internal planning tool, but there is no standard 1–2% rule. If you choose 1% of a $7,500 commission as your personal cap, that is $75; the percentage is simply a way to keep your spending consistent.

2. Count the whole cost

Include the gift, any extra customization, shipping, and applicable tax in the number you set aside. Kintoir offers free standard shipping when the order subtotal is over $150 after discounts; other shipping charges appear at checkout. A $139 box and a $189 basket can land in different total-cost ranges depending on the order.

3. Match the recipient and the moment

A first-time buyer may treasure a portrait of the home they worked so hard to buy. A client who loves to host may use a serving piece or entertaining basket. A seller who is leaving a longtime home may appreciate a keepsake—or prefer something that celebrates the next chapter. Ask what would feel right for that person before assuming every client wants a “welcome home” message.

4. Make the card specific

More spending does not automatically make a more thoughtful gift. Write one sentence that could only be for this client: a detail about their search, the care they put into selling, or the milestone you saw them reach. Check the selected listing for its card and personalization options; ready-to-gift editions may differ from personalized products.

Is a closing gift worth it for referrals?

A gift can be one part of staying in touch after closing, but it does not guarantee referrals. Treat it as a thank-you, not a transaction with an expected return. If you want to keep the relationship warm, pair a thoughtful handoff with a later check-in that is useful to the client.

Frequently asked questions

Do Realtors have to give closing gifts?

No. A closing gift is an optional gesture. Set a budget you can maintain across your business rather than feeling pressured to match someone else’s spend.

Are closing gifts tax deductible?

The IRS says business gifts may be deductible, generally subject to a $25 per-person annual limit, with rules for incidental costs and recordkeeping. A $200 gift does not mean a $200 gift deduction. Ask your tax professional how the rules apply to your business and keep your receipts.

When should I order?

Allow time for preparation and transit. Preparation times vary by product. Check the listing before ordering; personalized BBQ grill tool sets require 3–5 business days, and home-portrait products require 3–5 business days after a usable photo and complete details are received. Shipping transit time is additional. Check the specific product page and contact us before ordering if your closing is close. An order date or closing date alone does not guarantee delivery by that day.

Should buyers and sellers receive different gifts?

Often, yes. A new-home gift may suit a buyer, while a seller may be relocating or letting go of a meaningful property. Our closing gifts for sellers guide walks through those situations.
